Plantation Journal

PREFACE
There is a long history of plantation in Bangladesh. In the year of 1871, for the first time in Bangladesh Teak was planted at Kaptai in Rangamati. Plantation establishment and management of forest tree species, design area, along the road sides and the highway, inlands and coastal embankments and on the newly formed areas along the coast is one of the major forestry activities in Bangladesh. To ensure the success of this huge and very important program, it would require the service of professional who shall efficiency prepare plans and effectively carryout activities related to development of forest plantation. For achieving practical knowledge, planting of trees, their nursing and systematic management and keeping all the records in a word maintaining a plantation journal is necessary.

INTRODUCTION
Plantation means a forest crops raised artificially by sowing or planting. According to our forestry syllabus, each students of this institute has to plant seedlings when they are in first semester, at the site given them. So we planted ten seedlings each in first semester. All the information regarding the species and experiences gathered from the establishment activities are bought in this report.

OBJECTIVES
-The aim of plantation journal is to store the yearly records of different operations which will be helpful taking care, determining the annul increment, diseases and cures and finally for plantation planning and future study.
-To present the soil status of the site.
-Remark the problems and probable solutions.
-To include details about ecological and silvicultural characteristics of planted species.
-Toshow the present status of plantation.

LOCATION OF THE SITE
The plantation site is situated on the back side of Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia  Hall.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SITE
• Type: Sandy to sandy loamy
• Color: Yellowish brown.
• Topography: Hilly.
• Aspect: East to west.
• Slope: Steep
• Drainage: Well drained area due to sloppiness.
• Soil PH: 5.6

SEEDLING SOURCE
Locally distributed by IFESCU nursery.

PLANTATION PATTERN
Row plantation.

SPACING
•  2m×2m (plant to plant).
•  2m×2m (row to row).

TOTAL NUMBER OF PLANTED SEEDLINGS
Ten(10).

NAME OF THE SPECIES

1.Telsur (Hopea odorata)
Family: Dipterocarpaceae

2.Chickrassi  (Chickrassia tabularis)
Family: Fabaceae

 3.Akashmoni( Acacia auriculiformis)
 Family:  Fabaceae

QUALITY OF SEEDLINGS
The quality of seedlings was very good.

DATE OF PLANTATION:  24th August 2015.

DATE OF LAST WEEDING: 21th October, 2017

SILVICULTURAL OPERATION
a. Weeding: It is done to remove all weeds which compete with the growth of plants. Last weeding was done in: 21th October, 2017.
b. Pruning: It was done to remove the dead branches and lower branches. Last pruning was done in 21th October, 2017.
c. Mulching: It is the placement of cutting grasses around the base of the tree when weeding is done. The mulch will conserve moisture and when decomposed will add fertility to the soil. Last mulching was done in 21th October, 2017.

DATA COLLECTION OF DIFFERENT SEMESTER

Gap filling: Because of grazing and human interference some plants were died.As a result that place is filled up with Akashmoni.

Survival Rate: The survival rates of the seedlings are 100%.

RESULT
The overall growth rate of the seedling are good. Because the soil of this site is favorable for the tree growth.

PRESENT STATUS
The growth and vigor of the seedlings was so good. They are now in pole stage and two poles have been illegally felled by the encroachers.
CONSTRAINS AND DIFFICULTIES
The plantation site is not subjected to any serious problems. Yet it cannot be said that it is totally free from difficulties. The major problems so far I have encountered are as follows:

• Local people interference and grazing.
• Lack of fencing.
• Excessive weeds and climbers.

SOLVINGS
• Remarkable and definite boundary of the plantation area should set up.
• All the winter season the soil become dry, there should be process of watering the seedling.
• Protective entrance of the local people.
• Weeding and mulching regularly.

CONCLUSION
From the dealings with plantation development and establishment, I have an important realization that it is very tough to establish a tree as it is subjected to tremendous biotic and abiotic pressure.Preparation of plantation journal is not simply write down a report showing the data only rather it has greater importance for the maintenance and preparation of a plantation journal, one has to employ efficient management of plantation, has to take different data, time to time, has to analyze them and finally has to come on some decisions which consequently give detailed report.

So, it is evident that it is a continuous process and there is much scope to enrich ones practical knowledge. For doing these once have to take different need oriented measure which ultimately helps to develop professional skill which is more imperative.
